Fall in the Lowcountry: Festivals, Food & Fun Beyond Palmetto Bluff
There is something especially enjoyable about fall in the Lowcountry. The temperatures begin to ease, the humidity gives way to crisp mornings, and the calendar fills with the kind of festivals, outdoor gatherings and local traditions that make this such a wonderful place to live.
For those who call Palmetto Bluff home, one of the great advantages of the community is how easy it is to enjoy all of it. Within a short drive are the historic streets of Old Town Bluffton, the beaches and events of Hilton Head Island, and the restaurants, culture and architecture of Savannah.
Here are a few favorite ways to enjoy the season beyond Palmetto Bluff.
Start in Old Town Bluffton
The Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival, October 9–18, is perhaps the quintessential Lowcountry fall event. Now in its 22nd year, the festival celebrates Bluffton's history, art, waterways and local seafood with events throughout Old Town.
The highlight is the Street Fest on October 17 and 18, when Calhoun Street comes alive with more than 100 artists from across the region and beyond, along with local food, music and entertainment. It's the kind of weekend that invites you to wander, browse the galleries, grab something to eat and simply enjoy the character of Old Town Bluffton.
The festival also offers some distinctly Lowcountry experiences, including oyster farm tours, May River boat excursions, the Blessing of the Fleet and the season's first oyster roast at the Bluffton Oyster Factory Park.
And for Palmetto Bluff residents, it's an easy reminder that one of the area's most charming communities is just minutes away.
Enjoy a Saturday at Bluffton Farm & Flea
For something more casual, Bluffton Farm & Flea's Fall Fest offers an easy way to spend a fall morning outdoors. Throughout October, the market features local vendors, seasonal treats, a pumpkin patch and pumpkin painting, making it particularly appealing for families.
It is a different side of Bluffton than the polished resort experience—a little more local, relaxed and eclectic.
Head to Hilton Head for the Oyster Festival
As fall progresses, Hilton Head Island offers plenty of reasons to make the short trip across the bridge.
The Hilton Head Oyster Festival, November 6–7, celebrates one of the Lowcountry's signature foods. Friday evening features an all-you-can-eat feast with local oysters, Lowcountry boil, shrimp and grits and live music. Saturday moves to Lowcountry Celebration Park with oysters and seafood, live entertainment, artisan vendors and family activities.
It is hard to imagine a more appropriate menu for a November weekend on the South Carolina coast.
Take in the Hilton Head Motoring Festival
For something completely different, the Hilton Head Island Concours d'Elegance & Motoring Festival, October 29–November 1, brings exceptional automobiles, driving events and enthusiasts to the island.
It has become one of the region's signature fall weekends and is a particularly fun outing for anyone who appreciates classic and collectible automobiles.
The island's fall calendar also includes the Crescendo Celebration of Arts & Culture, running October 10 through November 23, with concerts, performances, exhibitions, tours and other cultural events taking place around Hilton Head.
Make a Fall Day Trip to Savannah
And then there is Savannah.
From Palmetto Bluff, Savannah is close enough to turn an ordinary fall afternoon into a day or evening in one of the South's most beautiful historic cities. Fall is an especially good time to explore its squares, stroll beneath the live oaks and Spanish moss, visit galleries and museums, and settle in for dinner downtown.
There are plenty of special events on the calendar as well. Savannah Oktoberfest returns October 10–11 along the riverfront, with live music, food, games and the annual Wiener Dog Races. Admission is free.
Later in October, the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, October 24–31, brings filmmakers, actors and film enthusiasts to the city for screenings, premieres, workshops and panels.
For something with a coastal twist, Tybee Island Pirate Fest takes place October 8–11, while the island's fall calendar continues into November with seafood and music events.
Fall Is Really About Getting Outside
Perhaps the best part of fall in the Lowcountry isn't any one festival.
It's having the freedom to decide on a Saturday morning that you'd like to walk around Old Town Bluffton, take a boat out on the May River, spend the afternoon on Hilton Head's beaches, explore Savannah's historic district or simply find a shaded patio for lunch.
From Palmetto Bluff, all of these experiences are close enough to become part of everyday life.
That proximity—to Bluffton, Hilton Head, Savannah and the waterways and beaches in between—is one of the things that makes fall here feel different. You don't have to plan a major trip to enjoy the season. Some of the best experiences are right outside your door.
Event dates and details are subject to change. Check with individual event organizers before making plans.
